New Beginnings: The Journey of the Qais Family to SLO

The newest SLOforHome supported family traveled the globe and waited 10 years for permanent resettlement with the UNHCR but they are happy to finally have a home here on the Central Coast. Qais, Najia and their children Ali Reza, Ali Akbar, and Maria arrived in San Luis Obispo in September eager to rebuild their lives.

Thanks to the support of SLOforHome volunteers Ali Reza and Ali Akbar have jumped into school. Fluent Mandarin Chinese and Dari speakers, the boys are learning English and making new friends. Along with little sister Maria, the children celebrated their first Halloween and had a great time trick or treating.

A new partnership with Cal Poly has provided Qais, Najia, and their children dedicated tutors through the training program for aspiring English as a Second Language teachers. Qais in particular has put his excellent language skills to good use, already securing temporary employment. Prior to moving, Qais was a manager in a manufacturing facility. If you know of full time job openings that might be a good fit please email [email protected]. Qais is eager to fully provide for his family and become independent.
